SOROTI

Soroti is a city in the Eastern Region of Uganda. It serves as the main commercial, administrative, and urban center of Soroti District and the broader Teso sub-region.
Key Facts

Location: Eastern Uganda, north of Lake Kyoga. It lies about 103–116 km (64–72 miles) northwest of Mbale by road, along routes connecting to Tororo, Lira, and other towns. Elevation is around 1,130 meters (3,710 ft).
Population: Approximately 134,199 (2024 census).
Status: Elevated to city status and operationalized around 2020–2021. It is governed by a City Council (current mayor noted as Mr. Paul Omer in recent records).

History: Settlement began around 1904 when an administrative post was established under Semei Kakungulu (sent by the Mbale District Commissioner). The site was chosen for its strategic rock formation (for defense) and nearby water sources. It became the permanent headquarters of the Teso region in 1912. Growth accelerated after World War I with permanent buildings, Asian traders, and markets based on barter of cotton, hides, groundnuts, and other produce.
The area saw conflict during the Uganda–Tanzania War (late 1970s) and the Ugandan Bush War (captured by the National Resistance Army in February 1986).

Geography & Landmarks: Soroti is known for Soroti Rock (also called Moru Apesur), a prominent granite volcanic plug/inselberg overlooking the city. Climbing it offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding plains. The city is near Lake Kyoga (important for fishing and water resources) and features swampy areas that influence the local climate.
Climate is generally warm, with mean maximum temperatures around 31°C and minima near 18°C; the hottest periods are often in February.

Economy & Culture: Agriculture dominates the surrounding district (sorghum, millet, cassava, sweet potatoes, groundnuts, oranges, mangoes, livestock). The city has a fruit processing factory and is a regional trade/transport hub. It hosts Uganda’s first solar power plant (Soroti Solar Station, ~10 MW).
The main ethnic groups are the Iteso and Kumam. Cultural highlights include traditional dances such as Akembe and Ajosi.

Education & Infrastructure: Home to the main campus of Soroti University (in Arapai suburb) and secondary campuses of other universities. It functions as a practical base for exploring Lake Kyoga fishing villages, nearby hills, and routes toward Karamoja.
In short, Soroti is a growing regional hub with colonial-era roots, a distinctive rock landmark, agricultural strength, and increasing urban development in eastern Uganda.
