OCULOI ROCK
Oculoi Rock is a granite rock formation and quarrying site in the Oculoi area (including Oculoi Sub-County) of Soroti District/City in eastern Uganda’s Teso sub-region.
It is one of several isolated rocky outcrops typical of the region’s relatively flat plains, alongside the better-known Soroti Rock (also called Opiyai Rock or Moru Apesur) that rises prominently in the town center. Oculoi Rock has been noted specifically as a stone-quarrying location that supports local livelihoods, though reports have also highlighted concerns about child labour at such sites.
Like other granite formations in the area, it forms part of the ancient Precambrian basement rocks that stand out against the surrounding savanna landscape. While Soroti Rock is more widely recognized for hiking, panoramic views toward Lake Kyoga and Mount Elgon, cultural significance to the Iteso people (including historical use of caves as refuge), and limited tourism, Oculoi Rock is primarily associated with economic activity through stone extraction rather than developed tourism or formal visitor facilities.
